What Mobex gave me has been the basis of all my career moves; it is through the benefit of time that I can appreciate how this helped me to make positive decisions. I first became involved with Mobex in 1994 as a volunteer on their Atlas summer camp; I must have been about 18 at the time.

I was already qualified as a climbing instructor and I started doing bits of freelance work for them. I got more and more involved until I became funded through the Rank Foundation as a trainee with Mobex, this involved a mixture of delivering outdoor activities and training courses. We got paid subsistence money and got money at the start to pay for equipment that we needed.

I’d been climbing since I was 12 years old and because I was already a climber I got my Single Pitch Supervisor Award which allowed me to train others. Then I was doing my A levels and working for a climbing wall manufacturer and drifted into instructing at the wall and doing some freelance work for Mobex. Mobex provided brilliant life experiences, I was still going through adolescence at the time and it was part of us growing up, I am still really good friends with lots of people that I worked with there.

I was involved with loads of different projects at Mobex and the more I got involved the more interest I had in long-term work with a youth work emphasis. I did a degree in Community and Youth Work becoming a qualified youth worker. I worked in a secure unit for young people that were locked up for their own safety or because of crimes that they had committed. I now work as a maths teacher at Sheffield Pupil Referral Unit for the Personalised Learning Service.

Mobex were like a family, they brought me up from being rock bottom, welcomed me in, gave me trust, gave me some skills and just boosted me so much it has given me a different outlook in life.

I got out of jail in 1990 and was living in a bail hostel and I went to do a first aid course at Mobex North East. I was really interested so I joined the probation group and later volunteered. I got my Basic Expedition Leaders Award and started freelancing going on to work on a disabilities development project.

As a volunteer I had an opportunity to canoe the Spay from source to sea for the John Muir Award. That required a huge amount of trust so I am quite proud of that. It was a great opportunity and I got the discovery award. Mobex sorted me out, kept me out of trouble. It has given me motivation. I’ve really turned things around now.

It gave me a lot of confidence and built up my self- esteem. They sent me to a retreat for a week, there was no hot running water and no electric and just three questions that you were asked: ‘Who are you? What do you want? How are you going to get there?’ I think that was the main turning point, by sending me there Mobex gave me a week for reflection, I came back and I knew what I wanted and how to get it. I wanted to be an outdoor instructor.

Now I’m working for a respite and crisis company in Wales using the outdoors as therapy. We can’t change the world for these young people but we can try and show them different ways of thinking, different ways of life and how to cope with traumatic experiences by using the outdoors. There should be more Mobex’s across the country.
